• Our Process

Our garments are thoughtfully designed in Australia and ethically produced across Bali and Java, Indonesia. Each piece begins with our small in-house design team, who collaborate closely with our trusted local production partner - a garment expert with over 25 years of experience in large-scale manufacturing across both regions.

Over the past seven years, we’ve nurtured a strong and respectful relationship with our partner Khoiri, working side by side to expand and refine our production in a considered and sustainable way. This close collaboration allows us to maintain quality, consistency, and transparency at every stage of the process - from the first sketch to the final stitch. This alignment and control has allowed us to grow from a small made-to-order (Etsy) business into an established brand operating two warehouses with ready-to-ship stock - all while maintaining the same care, transparency, and attention to detail that have guided us since day one.

Our production remains intentionally boutique in scale - we know exactly who makes our garments and where they’re made. Some pieces are crafted within clean and comfortable factory workspaces, while others are sewn by home sewers - often mothers who value the flexibility to work from home and set their own hours. This close-knit, hands-on approach ensures that every Piyama piece is crafted with intention, responsibility, and respect for the people behind it.

A key goal for 2026 is to achieve BSCI certification (Business Social Compliance Initiative) for our factory and production workspaces - a process that is already underway. This certification will further validate our ongoing commitment to responsible, transparent, and ethical manufacturing practices.

  • Our Makers

Behind every Piyama garment is a small team of talented individuals who bring our designs to life. We are proud to partner with a close-knit community of makers across Bali and Java, many of whom have been with us for years.

Our long-time production partner, Khoiri, leads a team of highly skilled cutters, sewers, quality controllers, and packing staff. Each member plays an essential role in our process, contributing their expertise and care at every step. Many are connected through family or friendship networks, creating a workplace that feels more like an extended family rather than a factory.

Clean, safe, and comfortable working environments are a non-negotiable part of our operations. Our teams enjoy spacious and well-ventilated work areas, clean drinking water, tea and coffee, Wi-Fi, and access to daily waste collection. Both Hindu and Muslim team members are supported, with time allocated for prayer and observance of religious holidays.

As Piyama has grown, we’ve expanded our network to include PT. Ambassador Garmindo, a trusted partner factory we collaborate with for larger-scale production runs when our minimum order quantities are met. In recent years, we’ve successfully partnered with them on several production orders to build inventory efficiently — including the launch of our USA warehouse in November 2024, which required a rapid and scalable production approach.

We deeply value the people behind our brand, their craftsmanship, dedication, and joy are woven into every Piyama piece. We believe that when our makers feel respected, supported, and happy, it reflects in the quality and spirit of the garments themselves.

  • Our Materials

At Piyama, we proudly work exclusively with natural fibres, meaning our fabrics contain no synthetic materials such as polyester or nylon.

Our core fibres include Rayon and Cotton. More recently, we’ve introduced LENZING™ Modal and Lyocell as blend companions - fibres that elevate the durability, breathability, and luxurious hand-feel of cotton.

Our 2025 goal of upgrading all Rayon used in our collections to LENZING™ ECOVERO™ is well underway, and we will continue to use this as our preferred Rayon fibre moving forward. This evolution reflects our ongoing commitment to choosing lower-impact materials that uphold the comfort, quality, and longevity Piyama is known for. For more detailed information on our fabrics, please visit our Fabrics page.

Our packaging selections are something we’re always improving, testing new materials to find the right balance between sustainability and practicality.

In the past, we trialed 100% Cassava Starch packaging (a fully compostable alternative made from natural plant materials). However, the Australian humidity proved to be a poor match, with many bags disintegrating long before use and causing replacements and stock damage.

After extensive testing of alternative options, we now use a blend of 60% Cassava Starch and 40% Recycled Plastic, which provides greater durability and protection for our stock while maintaining a reduced environmental footprint.

We choose to avoid the standard plastic shipping satchels offered by our third-party warehouses, instead bringing in our own recycled ocean-bound plastic mailers, a more responsible alternative that gives existing plastic a second life. These shipping satchels are sourced from "Better Packaging Co".

  • Our Impact

At Piyama, we believe that small, thoughtful actions can create meaningful change. From the fibres we choose to the way we produce and package each garment, every decision is made with care across all touch points.

We produce in small, considered batches, helping to minimise excess stock and fabric waste.

Since March 2025, we’ve proudly partnered with Trees4Trees, planting one tree for every order placed. This initiative supports reforestation in Indonesia, where our garments are made, helping to restore local ecosystems and empower surrounding communities. This initiative alone has shown to be one of our most meaningful yet, we’ve planted over 20,000 tree’s across Java in 7 months alone.

We continue to evolve our impact with intention, whether through increasing our use of eco-certified fibres like LENZING™ ECOVERO™, working toward BSCI certification for our production spaces, or supporting initiatives that create long-term social and environmental value.

At the heart of Piyama is a simple belief: when we care for the people and places behind what we make, everyone benefits.
